Project Description

Cabbal Pherick

St Patrick’s Chapel

Set within a burial ground, the large keeill at Cabbal Pherick is built from seashore boulders and may have been thatched. There are traces of the altar in the east end of keeill and nearby some white water-worn quartzite pebbles were found; these are sometimes called prayer stones, also found in graves of the same period and earlier. Next to the keeill was a priests cell with a fire pit or deep hearth inside and more prayer stones. About 32m from the keeill is a well, but more important is Spooyt Vane – the white waterfall– which is believed to have been a place of earlier pagan worship and possible Christian baptism. More information at Cabbal Pherick .
